Mt. Trashmore…What’s the Big Deal?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]When you hear the name “Mt. Trashmore”, the first thing that pops into your head may be “what?” or even “sounds gross”. But, if you ask a local Cedar Rapidian, you will find the truth, and this is a good one.
What once was an old landfill that could be spotted from virtually anywhere in downtown Cedar Rapids, is now a popular recreational trail Cedar Rapidians may walk or bike up throughout permitted seasons. Why is this such a big deal?
Home to three separate trails, Mt. Trashmore provides a fun and unique opportunity for residents to engage in fitness activities outside of their home or local gym. Treadmills and stationary bikes are great for convenience but heading up these revamped trails is something many are taking advantage of. Included at this site is the Overlook Trail, Trashmore Trail, & Stumptown Trail. When at the top of Mt. Trashmore, you can overlook our beautiful city and experience a major sense of pure satisfaction for making this feat. You may have created an impactful routine, but why not break away on a nice spring day and explore a little? According to the Solid Waste Agency of Cedar Rapids, over 4,300 people used the trails and visited in 2019.
Even better for 2020, the Czech Village / New Bohemia District has created the Mt. Trashmore Challenge. This challenge is plain and simple – how many times can you climb Mt. Trashmore? This fitness initiative will span from April through October of this year. With a geocoding application, each trip made by those participating in the challenge is tracked. There is no restriction as to how you accomplish this. For better perspective, visit https://trashmorechallenge.com/about/ for equivalent milestones based on the number of trips you make! You are sure to be amazed with this information.
After you complete your trip(s) any given day throughout the seasonal period, consider extending your outing and visit local businesses in the Czech & Newbo Districts. Reward yourself with a beverage at Lion Bridge Brewing or maybe a scoop or two of ice-cream from Almost Famous Popcorn! Bring a friend and start your new fitness journey in 2020 through the Mt. Trashmore Challenge.
